On average, about 20 percent of all children between the ages of five and 11 are suffering from untreated tooth decay, while 13 percent of adolescents have untreated cavities. Tooth decay is highly preventable and treatable, but when it is allowed to progress untreated, it can lead to infection, abscesses and tooth loss. Protecting your child’s dental health starts with you and should begin early.

One of the best ways to protect your children’s teeth is by teaching them good dental habits. Even before your child has a tooth, you can take a wet washcloth and wipe down his or her gums after each meal and before bed. Once teeth appear, use a soft toothbrush to gently clean each tooth. When your child is old enough to brush on his or her own, monitor him or her carefully to ensure the brushing is done properly and the rinsing is thorough to remove any remaining toothpaste.

If your children drink bottled water, they may not be getting enough fluoride to strengthen their teeth. Fluoride supplements or topical treatments may be needed. Sealants can be another excellent preventive option. Children with sealants on their permanent molars are 80 percent less likely to suffer from tooth decay for at least two to four years after placement. Children should have their first dental appointment by the time they have their first tooth or are 12 months old. Teeth whitening can vary in price depending on the type of procedure used and the requirements of the patient. A variety of options are available, but the extent of treatment can differ depending on how much discoloration must be removed. Here is a look at what determines the cost of this procedure.

Different Options

Multiple professional whitening treatments are available at our office. In addition to conventional in-office tooth whitening, patients can choose Zoom whitening or our take-home whitening kits. Patients can expect a different cost based on the procedure they choose.

Stain Severity

Some stains are more difficult to remove than others. For example, stains from smoking are especially persistent compared to those from wine or coffee. When longer treatment time and more materials are necessary to eliminate discoloration, associated costs are likely to be higher.

With certain whitening options, such as Zoom whitening, patients can schedule repeat sessions to boost their results. Regular whitening appointments can also be beneficial for those who habitually smoke or drink coffee, tea or wine. In each case, patients can include repeat sessions in their tooth whitening budget. Patients can schedule a consultation with our dentist to learn more about what affects our average cost of teeth whitening.

Hypersomnia refers to excess daytime sleepiness and can be a symptom of sleep apnea. When you have sleep apnea, your sleep is constantly being interrupted because breathing becomes obstructed. You may not remember waking up, but your brain rouses just enough to get your airway open again. This prevents you from slipping into the deeper, more restful stages of sleep. Daytime sleepiness, or hypersomnia, is one of the sleep apnea signs that indicate a need for further evaluation.

When you have hypersomnia, you may feel tired or drowsy throughout the day. You may lack the energy that keeps you from doing everything you want to do. You may even find yourself falling asleep unintentionally at work, behind the wheel or in other inappropriate places. Hypersomnia is not always due to sleep apnea, however. It can also be associated with narcolepsy, sleep deprivation, neurological disease, head injuries and the use of certain medications. An accurate diagnosis will ensure you get the treatment you need.

If you have sleep apnea with hypersomnia, treatment for the apnea should also alleviate the hypersomnia. CPAP therapy, oral appliance therapy and lifestyle changes can all be good choices to help resolve the sleep apnea and hypersomnia. You may also need to address sleep hygiene factors to ensure you are creating the best possible environment for your rest. Dental implants are considered the best option currently in standard care when it comes to replacing missing teeth. Most people are candidates for this procedure, which offers numerous benefits to patients. If you have lost one or more teeth, you may also be a good candidate. Yet, only an experienced dental implants dentist can tell you for sure.

Some of the benefits you can expect include:

  • Long-lasting results
Implants are designed to last a lifetime.
  • Worry-free teeth
Implants will not slip out of place. Also, they do not need anything beyond normal dental hygiene and routine checkups.
  • Natural face shape
The natural design of implants helps keep your facial features intact and prevents the collapse of underlying bone tissue that can occur after tooth loss.
  • Natural-looking smile
Implants are made to look just like your own, natural teeth.
  • Bone protection
Because implants stimulate bone tissue, they help keep it strong and prevent the resorption that can occur when a tooth has been lost.
  • No need to remove
You will not need to store your teeth in a glass by the bed, because they will remain securely in your mouth where they belong.
  • Clear and easy speaking
Implants mean no more mumbling, clicking or speech difficulties.
  • No need to change your diet
Implants are strong enough to be used like natural teeth, so you can still eat all your favorite foods.
  • No more cavities
The materials that are used to make implants do not decay or corrode over time.
  • Healthier teeth
We do not need to alter healthy teeth to place implants, which are supported by the jawbone rather than adjacent teeth.
  • Predictable results
The success rate of implants is greater than 98 percent, making them one of the most reliable treatment options.

Dental implants are the next best thing to your own teeth. They give you a new smile that looks and feels just like natural teeth. Now you can feel confident with every word you speak, every smile you share and every bite you eat. Invisalign Teen offers all of the advantages of Invisalign Full but to younger patients. This treatment from our Invisalign provider includes extra features that support progress monitoring and adjusting for continued growth, so a majority of patients under age 17 can receive it. Here is how this treatment works and the advantages it brings to our recipients.

How Teeth Are Straightened by Invisalign Teen

Invisalign Teen uses a series of customized clear aligners that fit over teeth to move crooked, spaced, or over-crowded teeth into their correct positions. At regular appointments, patients visit our dentist to have their progress checked and get the next stage of aligners. Most patients finish treatment within a year to a year and a half, but this varies with individual goals.

Additional Features of Invisalign Teen

The aligners used with Invisalign Teen have indicators that let our dentist verify compliance. To work in concert with maturing jaws, the aligners also have special corrective bumps. Due to the activeness and busy lifestyle of teens, the risks of losing or breaking aligners are increased, so extra aligners are included automatically.

Most bite irregularities, including overbite, underbite, crossbite and improper tooth spacing and rotation, can be corrected with Invisalign Teen. To learn more about how this treatment works, patients can schedule a consultation with our expert in Invisalign Teen in Los Angeles.

Dental veneers are considered a permanent treatment, but they can fall off under certain circumstances, such as if they are not attached to the teeth properly. Like other treatments, therefore, dental veneers should only be placed by a dentist with the proper education, equipment and experience to do so correctly. Here is more about how veneers can fall off and how this issue can be prevented.

How Veneers Can Fall Off

Veneers can potentially fall off if they are subjected to undue force or installed incorrectly. After getting veneers, patients should avoid using their veneer-covered teeth to bite down on very hard foods. The use of high-quality materials and the careful fitting of veneers can also minimize risks of their falling off.

How Our Dentist Places Veneers

Our dentist takes several steps to ensure proper attachment of veneers. First, our dentist precisely designs the veneers based on photographs, bite impressions and X-rays. During placement, our dentist takes time to fit the veneers and bond them to the teeth completely so that they are resistant to force placed on them.

Our dentist can inform patients on how to take proper care of their veneers so that their results last for as long as possible. To learn more about veneers and the importance of having this treatment performed by a professional, patients can schedule a consultation with our expert in dental veneers in Beverly Hills, CA.

Snoring is one of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea, but not all snoring is caused by apnea. Only an experienced sleep doctor can determine if your snoring is caused by sleep apnea. If it is, many treatments are available that can help stop the snoring and control your symptoms.

In patients with obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, the airway becomes obstructed during sleep. The muscles around the throat relax. This usually is not a problem for people without sleep apnea because the muscles are still strong enough to keep the airways open. Yet, in someone with sleep apnea symptoms, this relaxation can result in the complete collapse of the airways, which causes breathing to stop.

In those with sleep apnea, partial obstruction causes a vibration and the unmistakable sounds of snoring. If you snore loudly or chronically, or if your snoring is regularly interrupted by pauses in breathing, you may have sleep apnea. A sleep evaluation can identify your specific needs, determine the best course of action to control your sleep apnea symptoms, and get your health back on track.
