Dental Implants Placement Procedure

For anyone who has lost a tooth, or several teeth, it can be quite a shocking ordeal. Because a missing tooth can affect your normal speaking and eating functions, and because it can alter the physical structure of your face, it is important to consult a dentist about your replacement options. A very effective option that our Northridge dentist recommends is the placement of dental implants.
The first stage in placing a dental implant is to surgically bury the dental implant underneath the gum. The dentist will make sure that the implant is flush with the bone, and then will remove some of the overlying gum so that it is exposed.
The second stage is connecting an abutment to the implant. The abutment is a post that will allow for the attachment of the prosthetic tooth. Before the tooth can be placed, the gum must first be allowed to heal around the abutment.
The last stage of the procedure begins with the dentist checking to make sure that the abutment/implant combination has successfully osseointegrated into the gums. Once this key element is verified by the dentist, the prosthetic tooth is attached to the implant. Most dental implants will require two to four months for the bone to heal. Our dentist will provide you with aftercare instructions.
