How Safe Are Whitening Treatments?

The American Dental Association (ADA) has spent the last 20 years surveying teeth whitening treatments to determine their safety and effectiveness. The ADA recently released a statement proclaiming teeth whitening an overall safe procedure, but the organization did recommend consulting a dentist like our expert in tooth whitening in Beverly Hills before selecting a bleaching product.

Apart from asking an expert, here are some things you can do to assure yourself of the safety of teeth whitening methods:

•    Choose a teeth whitening treatment using a mid-range bleaching agent. If you whiten at home, be sure the product you are using is stamped with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.
•    Do not get addicted to teeth whitening. Once your teeth reach an adequate shade of white with a whitening treatment, you should need to touch-up your teeth with bleaching agents no more than twice a year.
•    Follow directions. Whether you whiten at home or seek professional treatment, closely follow directions for post-treatment care, such as avoiding fruit juices and other acidic beverages for the first few hours after whitening.
•    Be aware of tooth sensitivity. If your teeth or gums feel sensitive as a result of whitening treatment, stop treatment immediately and consult your dentist on how to proceed with your dental care.

However you choose to whiten your teeth, keep these steps in mind for optimal safety during the process.
