What are Dental Bridges Made of?

When one or more teeth are missing in a row, they may need to be replaced through the use of a bridge. A bridge provides a more permanent solution for one or more missing teeth than partial dentures, providing greater stability and function.

Dental bridges are made up of two crowns on the outer edges, and the replacement teeth known as pontics. The crowns are attached to the teeth surrounding the gap where the missing teeth used to be. In order for the crowns to be attached, teeth must be properly shaped and contoured in order for the crowns to fit over the top of them properly. The crowns are cemented in place and can only be removed by the dentist.

While some dental care providers have a preference for the materials used in making a bridge, there are several options. Typically, bridges are made out of porcelain or ceramic materials. However, there are times when a bridge can be made out of gold or other alloys.
