What is Involved in Crown Lengthening?

A crown lengthening procedure is a special dental treatment that can have both restorative and cosmetic benefits. Our Northridge dentist can use a crown lengthening to expose more of the dental crown to improve the appearance of a gummy smile or to complete essential dental restorations.

If you are a candidate for a crown lengthening, we will begin by numbing the area in which we will be working. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient procedure, so local anesthetic is usually sufficient for most patients. Once the area is numb, the tissues will be carefully separated from the tooth. Excess tissue will be adjusted, and in some cases, the bone surrounding the tooth will also be adjusted to ensure the best results.

After the crown lengthening procedure, the area will be flushed and cleaned, and stitches or bandages will be placed. Good dental hygiene will promote healing, but we may also prescribe antibiotics and painkillers to reduce the risk of complications. Once the site has healed, the tooth can be restored with a dental crown or other restoration, or you can continue with your smile makeover treatment plan.
